OK kupo! Let me give you a quick introduction to the anime/movie/pop culture section of this blog before I review the excellent anime Ore No Imoto Ga Konna Ni kawaii Wake…ok the title is long but we’ll get back to that. These Friday posts will be dedicated to discussions and reviews for anything not game related. I’ll cover lots of stuff from cosplay to new movies coming out. I do this because its important for a hero or Heroine (like yourself) to have a good well rounded grasp of the world you are trying to save! But anyway for now let’s focus on this review!
Ore No Imoto Ga Konna Ni Kawaii Wake Ga Nai or My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute. Is Despite the title a non incestuous slice of life anime about a young girl just asking her brother for a little life experience when she’s having a problem coping with a little secret.
The story follows the life of a boy named Kyosuke Kosaka, and his young fourteen year old sister Kirino. Kyosuke’s little sister is a model, she’s popular, and she likes to treat him like crap, that is until one day. Kyosuke finds a DVD of a popular girls anime, once opened he discovers an adult video game. It isn’t long before the sister comes looking for it and a whole slew of interesting events unfold as Kirino asks her older brother to help her keep her secret and help her understand how to live both the life of a popular model, and a Helpless anime Otaku (fanatic/nerd).
Kirino is an interesting character in the fact of how many layers she portrays over the course of the show. Going from a completely stand-offish mean younger sister to slowly showing the side of herself that appreciates and loves her brother can be sweet. Kyosuke is also well developed as an older brother who has had little to do with his sister’s life; his reactions to suddenly being thrust into not only her popular lifestyle but also the world of Otaku are almost always funny and embarrassing. Often times Kirino puts Kyosuke in an awkward positions, like buying her adult games or exclusive anime paraphernalia.
Now these two aren’t the only characters in the cast (wouldn’t be much of a show with only two people kupo!). no there are many characters that Kyosuke meets as he helps out Kirino understand her addiction to anime. One of the most notable being KuroNeko, a gothic Lolita cosplayer who while being much like kirino; she also has many defining differences. A few of these being that she accepts her chosen hobby completely and is confidant showing it off; thus becomes a sort of ideal that Kirino is hard to admit to at first.
Did I mention the animation is gorgeous Kupo! From beginning to end the show shines with well defined characters and plenty of locations that are also well populated. The themes of what is proper in society and what acceptance of one’s own likes in today’s world are really well balanced with all of the goofy hijinks that crop up around every corner.
The only downside to this anime is that there this a lot of potential for more stories to be told and I felt that the end is left to open to really feel complete. A second season could easily fix this small problem but as of now there doesn’t seem to be anything on the horizon.
Overview: a cute slice of life anime that could have dipped into the more erotic subjects but stays delightfully innocent in its presentation. Good characters and interesting situations are only marred by the fact that there is still more too tell.
I rate Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai 4/5 Kupo!
