What happens when you take a little known game on the gameboy color, reimaging it with better graphics and solid game play involving teleporting, time traveling, and Frost gun shooting through 4 massive worlds with a killer 5.1 surround soundtrack as a little yellow bird? That game would be Toki Tori!
Toki Tori started out as a simple puzzle/platform game for the gameboy color back in 2001 and was generally well received despite releasing at the end of the gameboy colors life. Jump ahead 7 years and a masterful remake surfaces on the Nintendo Wii Shop channel. With a new 3-d art style set into a 2-D plane it updated the game to today’s standards and garnered the attention this little indie gem deserved, getting high marks in many publications at the time.
What sets Toki Tori apart from the rest of the puzzling pack is that it has a strong focus on the use of Tools to explore and figure out the game’s many different maze like levels. Over the course the whopping 80 levels spanning 4 unique worlds and settings the titular character Toki Tori must use all the tools at his disposal to freeze, teleport, and trap his way to eggs scattered throughout the world. Do you choose to set a trap for that scary ghost, or set a bridge to simply go over him? Situations are vast and for the most part open ended in the beginning, but closing down to one solution only for the later levels; which might cause some casual puzzlers to leave in frustration.
But don’t let this discourage you, underneath the platform puzzling is a deep and fun experience for the whole family. Given my time with toki tori I found it a great game to sit down and relax to; Discovering different ways to solve puzzles and explore each colorful area provided hours of fun and honestly made the most out of the humble five dollar price tag.
I’d easily recommend Toki Tori for any fan of the Puzzle genre and it’s a great game for the whole family. With plenty of charm and love packed into every corner of Toki Tori I’d be hard pressed not to at the very least enjoy my time with this magic title. With the exception of the singular solutions this is a must have for puzzle fans out there.
One more thing Kupo! Toki Tori’s sequal Toki Tori 2 was recently announced and is currently in its Alpha stages. Still in the loving hands at Two Tribes Toki Tori 2 is already shaping up to be another fantastic adventure. To date they have shown off some fantastic looking production art and have stated that tools will not be returning. What this means for game play? I’m sure to find out! Until then await my next report to you faithful adventurers!
A fun and exciting puzzle platform game with lots of charm and intuitiveness, sadly marred by the singular solutions at later levels that might turn away some of the more casual crowd. Good graphics, good puzzles, fun atmosphere!
I rate Toki Tori 4/5 Kupo!
