Seasons: 7 (358 episodes) Original Run: April 3rd, 2004 – April 4th, 2011
Sgt. Frog or Keroro Gunso in Japan is a wonderfully hysterical comedy about a small platoon of space frogs that wish to conquer earth. What ensues in non-stop sight gags, one liners, and mecha references that mixes into a hell of a good time for pretty much all ages.
Sgt. Frog begins with a small Keronian (Frog type alien) named Sgt.Keroro as he is captured by an unsuspecting Earthling family, the Hinata’s. What follows it not unlike the plot to Invader Zim. Keroro spends his time as a servant for the hinata’s while performing a daily scheme to take over our tiny blue planet. The
catch is that he is incredibly terrible at doing so, and it isn’t until he finds the other members of the ‘A.R.M.P.I.T’ platoon that he really begins to cause complete froggy chaos on all of earth.
What sets this show apart is the well written Jokes, something I have to commend Funimation for was their apt humor as every line in this show delivers laughs and nervous giggles as the situations go from bad to worse. The common use of the narrator as a functioning character as well as the caption writer is brilliant. Not to mention the mile and a half long list of gundam references and half a dozen other giant robot anime appearing to give fans a good laugh from time to time.
Aside from jokes the characters are very well written and often show a depth of realism in their reactions to the alien’s antics. Natsumi Hinata (daughter to Aki ‘the mom’ hinata) carries a constant dose of rage for the aliens only briefly ever acknowledging them ever having a good idea when she could instead give them a pummeling. Fuyuki Hinata (the son) is a hopeless weakling that is in love with the occult and is the polar opposite of his sister, helping the frogs whenever he can get the chance. Aside from these two there is a dozen other characters all with a million little details that come up over and over just incase you ever forget and each episode of the show often focuses on one of them as the chaos runs rampant through each situation.
Over all the animation is great and the characters are all unique and enjoyable to watch no matter what they might be going through (dental mission Kupo!) but one thing I can say is this show is defiantly good in small bites. Need a break or are hanging with some friends, throw on Sgt. Frog and watch everyone just enjoy the hilarious antics. If nothing else this show will make you smile.
An interesting take on the invading mascot character formula that knows not to take itself to seriously. Great for all ages as the jokes try to hit every demographic imaginable, Plenty of gags and an excellent way to waste some time.
I rate Sgt. Frog 4/5 Kupo!
