The Sly Collection (Sucker Punch/ Sanzaru games)
System: PS3 Release Date: November 9th, 2010
ESRB rating: E10+
The Sly Collection is a HD remastered collection of the Sly Cooper Trilogy released by sucker punch on the ps2. The collection consists of ‘Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus’, ‘Sly 2: Band of Thieves’, and ‘Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves’ and a collection of mini games created by Sanzaru games; the team behind the Remastering of this classic trilogy.
The Sly games follow a team of ‘good guy’ thieves named Bentley the turtle: Hacker and over all brains of the operation, Murray the Hippo: Muscle and Driving are his thing, and of course Sly Cooper the Raccoon: Agile thief and all around jack of all trades. The three work together to steal treasures and for the most of the series thwart bad guys doing bad things.
What’s nice about The Sly Collection is the value and quality that was put into this port. The games look amazing and for those who hadn’t played the original releases on the ps2 might even mistake these games as native ps3 titles. The game runs at 720p and sixty fps while dropping to thirty fps when 3-D is activated. The only hiccup in the graphics comes in the mission briefing cut scenes that seem to have been left in their original resolution which causes them to look terrible in comparison to in game exploration.
Some of the new editions to the collection are a small collection of 4 new mini games and the choice to turn on the above mentioned 3-D effects in the mini games alone. The mini games themselves are move compatible and are standard point and click fair. One of the best things about this release is the inclusion of Trophies (shame to admit it but I love shiny trophies kupo) this adds a lot of replayablity to the series and is a good incentive to those that wish to revisit these classics
The interesting thing about the sly cooper series that sets it apart from other action adventure titles with a animal main character and cast (rachet and clank, jack and dexter) is that the stories are very dark, for lack of a better word the world the Cooper gang explores is full of people doing bad things and the characters go through a lot before it’s all over. This was refreshing giving how often a game like this plays with the kid gloves on.
A good comparison to the sly cooper games would be the obvious spiritual successor Infamous also by Sucker punch and the Uncharted series by Naughty dog. Sly is charismatic and does everything for his friends and more often than not I thought I saw a little bit of Sly while I was surviving the impossible as Nathan Drake. If you liked either Infamous or Uncharted I can’t recommend the Sly Cooper series enough.
Overall The Sly Collection is a fantastic buy for the whole family. The story is mature enough for adults to enjoy it and soft enough that younger kids can still enjoy it without missing too much. Graphically the overhaul is amazing, with the exception of the Briefing scenes this series is easily a welcome title in any ps3 library. It’s good to mention for fans who don’t want to put down the 40$ to buy the collection all three games are re-releasing on the PSN as individual downloadable titles by the end of November.
I rate The Sly Collection 4/5 Kupo!
